Paraphrasing Effectively Series

Motivation: A person’s motivation for achieving certain goals is affected by personal and by situational factors, including the expected outcome from these actions and their consequences. ~ Dr D. Chris Alleyne

Here are this week’s academic tips on paraphrasing.

Technique 1

Change your vocabulary.

Many students get into plagiarism trouble because of an inability to paraphrase properly. Here is your tip for today.

Use some of the original key terms but many of your own words and sentence structure to state the idea. Your job is to cite the original idea, not the words. Here is an example of one way to do this:

Original: In a 2004 article, James promoted arguments by medical professors who contended that global changes were influencing the spread of disease.

Paraphrase: Medical professors argued that changes across the globe were making the spread of diseases easier (James, 2004).

Key Point: We learn how to use different vocabulary but keep the same essence of the idea.
