Do online students perform well?
Enrollment in online classes has tripled over the last decade, but the efficacy of learning online remains unclear to many. Studies show that when it comes to online vs. the traditional classroom, controlling for other constructs, there was no significant difference between exam scores of each group. In addition, student evaluations did not differ between groups. The academic performance of online students was the same as that of traditional students. However, among online students, feelings of loneliness and learning burnout negatively influenced students overall academic experience and their perceptions of stress. Researchers also indicated that stressors such as loneliness and burnout have become a common problem among online students.
This negative emotional state of loneliness involves feeling void, secluded, desolate, and a lack of satisfaction with one’s social relationships. Academic coaching has been found to be effective in enhancing student success and is one approach that can help meet the needs of online students. Studies show that one-on-one coaching interactions tend to have large effects on student outcomes and significantly reducing negative emotional states among online students.
Several recent studies in social-psychology find that short interventions occurring at an appropriate time can have lasting effects on student outcomes. Some of these include those that help students define their long-run goals or purpose for learning and those that teach the “growth mind set” idea that intelligence is malleable. This help students keep negative events in perspective by self-affirming their values, all leading to positive outcomes. Moral of the story is to use an educational or academic coach when needed at every level of your educational career for improving academic performance and success.
