Making a difference through EPIC Principles
The dawn of a new year gives us all a chance to make changes for realizing new outcomes. A new year as a doctoral candidate gives opportunities for successful planning on how you can achieve your ultimate goal, which is to complete your study and graduate. What worked last year but can be improved; what did not work and must be changed are some questions you may ask yourself.
As a self-regulated learner (SRL), the outcome must be that whatever you are doing must make a difference (MAD) towards your academic goal of completing your dissertation and graduating. Rather than continuing along the same sometimes hopeless path or misguided actions of last year, it’s important that you develop your own distinct MADness by using energy, purpose, identity, and courage (EPIC) principles. You will need energy to focus on an effective and efficient plan for delivering on your academic purpose. A clear purpose is not only to wildly hypothesize about studying harder or longer but by having a clear plan for fulfilling your academic goals. This is by focusing, identifying, and developing such a purpose, working towards achieving it, and linking every decision towards your purpose (graduating with your doctorate degree).
You will need to identify your own achievement plan and allow others to help you fulfill your goals. This is by giving you the time to study, focus, and be uninterrupted during study times. Finally, enhancing your courage for discipline contributes to your own leadership. Ask questions if you are unsure; don’t be afraid of making mistakes and believe in yourself.
As an academic practitioner, there is great responsibility to MAD among SRL doctoral candidates. This is by helping doctoral candidates fulfill their esteem and self-actualizing goals such as completing their doctoral study and graduating. As doctoral candidates, your responsibility is embracing opportunities that can accelerate your progress and achieve completion of your study quickly. It is tough being an SRL, but you must work this year towards liberating yourself from research quagmire or quicksand, and empower yourself with progress.
As an academic dissertation coach, (ADC) and I am sure I can help you. If you believe a small investment in more resources such as using an ADC can help you develop the EPIC MADness needed for SRL success, please feel free to reach out to me. Many researchers linked dissertation coaching with academic success, especially among SRLs. Researchers like Howlett et al. (2021) found that dissertation coaching advanced student learning, well-being, and success. Having 13 years of experience demonstrated that dissertation coaching help SLR doctoral candidates become more active and purposeful, and generated academic goal attainment such as completing the dissertation process. The collaborative approach of dissertation coaching increase engagement in domains that are often associated with improving academic performance. These areas also include developing research skills, APA writing skills, critical thinking, study skills, time management skills, and more. Allow me to help you if you believe you will benefit.
