Enrolling in a doctorate program as social science researchers is to one day be an independent social science researcher (Doctor). When many hear the word science, this word often generate many images such as heavy math, laboratories, white coats, even thinking about people who dig up old bones, and so on. In reality, science is none of those types of images as such, but rather a method of inquiry, and a way to learn about human attitudes and behaviors (social science) in this world we call home.
Social science is a deliberate and rigorous way of observing, measuring, and analyzing information from data collected. Some types of data are quantitative, and some are qualitative. This type of inquiry is therefore called the methodology. It’s like getting a story that quantitative data tells or the story that qualitative data tells. Sometimes researchers put both methods together, known as mixed methods, to get a richer understanding of the information from a logico-empirical perspective (logic and observation). Within this type of social science is something called a systematic explanation of what is happening and why (theory or concept). Understand that science is not necessarily about proving or deciding right or wrong. Science is more about the way a system is working within a set of guidelines.
Scientifically, one can determine if there are more benefits to doing something or not doing it, but one cannot say A is right or B is wrong. For instance, science cannot prove if being a Christian is better than being a Muslim, but a scientist can determine if there is a difference in the way people of these two faiths live their lives. Scientist can also determine things like differences in life satisfaction, strength of family bonds, health habits, and so on within these two groups. Social science can therefore help researchers determine the state of a current situation and why the situation may exist. Researchers use agreed and developed stipulated criteria to determine how things ought to be or how people feel about a situation. Engaging in these types of enquiry is no easy feat and requires understanding some basic principles that is foundational in social science research.
My goal as a social science dissertation coach is to help guide student researchers through their dissertation journey using these foundational principles whether conducting a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods of inquiry. A lack of understanding and application of these principles keep many research students from progressing through their study, often leading to undesirable outcomes. Imagine friends and family watching a final defense of their study, a chair and committee praising good work, and cohorts admiring accomplishments. This need not be a fantasy, together these accomplishments can surely be a reality.
If I can ever help, please do not hesitate to call on me. I am here to help you.
