Overthinking your Dissertation
Many doctoral students make the mistake of thinking their dissertation project is a project that will win them the Nobel Prize, is the last and final answer to an urgent and serious problem, is the last and most important research paper they will ever write, is a project that will get them recognized in their field, or that somehow, all their friends and relatives will care and be excited about their study. All of those things are not why you are doing or should undertake a dissertation project.
A dissertation is a formal research project required to complete your doctoral degree, centered around adding a solution to an important problem in your field. Findings from your study will add or not add to all possible solutions of a problem, and therefore, doctoral students should not try solving the total problem, you cannot. The dissertation, though required to be published, is a starting point of a stream of many future publications in your field. So, there is no need to try to solve it all (and you can’t) in one study.
A successful dissertation is an indication that a student has acquired the highest form of academic writing, is able to apply generally accepted theories to current or similar problems in a field while offering valuable solutions. As such, the goal is to take on an empirical study that addresses your narrowly but well-defined problem utilizing ethical principles and protocols when conducting research using human subjects. Some of these include protecting privacy, avoiding harm, enforcing participant’s rights, ensuring confidentiality and anonymity, avoiding conflicts of interest, and so on. Research done correctly should produce joy and excitement in discovering outcomes and thereby creating new knowledge in a discipline.
