Are Your Emotions Hindering Your Dissertation Progress?
When conducting your dissertation research, many candidates experience a flood of emotions that can inspire or debilitate their research progress. It is therefore reasonable to consider the extent a relationship may exist between cognitive or intellectual functions and emotions. Researchers found that (a) cognitive activities and their material basis, the brain, have a long evolutionary history, (b) cognitive capacities have evolved along with the evolution of the brain, and (c) cognitions are intimately related to emotions.
The information in Table 1 are examples meant to show occurrences between certain stimuli such as a threat by an enemy or conducting a dissertation study, followed by the reasoning or interpretation stimuli by the brain, such as danger or difficult, respectively. Researchers found that such cognitions were often reflective of an unawareness that was often followed by introspective feelings such as fear or despair. The feeling state was only one step in a chain of reactions and will be followed by certain probabilities, including some kind of appropriate action or behavior to influence an outcome.

Such behaviors, if successful, lead to the protection of the individual or assistance provided by substitutes or other groups such as the police or professionals like dissertation coaches. As such, the word emotion is not just about how you feel about a stimulus, but a complex chain of reactions, which has adaptive value for individuals dealing with various kinds of life crises or survival problems. Researchers found that whether appropriate and effective behaviors occurred, the goal or purpose of the chain of emotional reactions; aspects of the emotional chain can be blocked, modified, or distorted to eventuate specific outcomes from stimuli. One can therefore conclude, it is a lack of attention to these changes in an emotional chain that have largely led to poor control of emotions and its outcomes: Affecting your life, particularly when engaging in complex projects such as the dissertation.
